A man came into work yesterday to order some food. I noticed that his hands and feet were extremely large and while he was giving me instructions, I couldn’t help but picture him bouncing around on all fours when he’s at home. I was almost confused when he didn’t want to place an order for a banana sandwich, or a side of banana for a salad. He didn’t even inquire about our banana tea. But I guess that’s ok. He can keep his secret to himself if he pleases. But we all know that monkeys aren’t good at being quiet.

I’ve also encountered an interesting thing about pregnant women: they’ll order healthy meals (for the baby), but in the last second…add on a piece of devastatingly delicious chocolate cake. And upon making that request, everything about their being changes, a new voices comes out from their lips. It’s as if they’re about to experience the “sin” of chocolate for the first time. And the excuse is always the same: “Well I AM pregnant! Let me have my craving!” And I give it to them because there is always an interesting arousal in sinning.

Tomorrow is the 20th birthday of a friend that I’ve known for 15 of those years. We met in kindergarten and moved away from eachother in the third grade. But distance didn’t keep us from eachother. There were always letters, which turned into emails. Our senior year of high school, we flew to eachother’s cities and were dates to the other’s prom. But besides surface questions of “How’s life?” “You got a girlfriend/boyfriend?” “Whatever happened to your dog?”, when we had the chance to dig deeper about the other’s real character, we never did. We saw changes. I grew into a liberal young woman that buried her face in novels while he remained active with sports and mathematical equations. How did we let an opportunity to build a strong friendship slip away?

Should I be bothered by the fact that I long to fill my free moments with something “useful” to busy myself along so that months can quickly pass? Will I end up missing something that I need to catch in the quiet?

I have a biological clock

Never in my life have I had the craving for children. Most of my friends even assumed that I wouldn’t get married just because I used to be so picky. But now that I’ve fallen in love, the idea of becoming a mother seems to be growing on me. What is this all about? Why do I feel this way? And so I believe that this confirms that I have a biological clock that has now kicked into full gear. I’ve even started picking out names for the unknown child that won’t even be present for a minimum of seven years (atleast I hope.) And the other day, I read an article where researchers had figured out that the 900,000,000 child will be born in America in nine months. I started thinking to myself, wouldn’t that be cool if I could claim that spot? Oh dear!

So I’ve just realized that I’ve started every post with ‘so’ at the beginning. I’m going to continue doing so. I guess it’s my trademark.

Nothing exciting is taking place and that seems to make life run a little bit slower. Maybe I need a new battery to re-ignite some spunk.

So at work I’ve discovered that my managers have some interesting bachelors degrees. One: computer science, the next: political science, and the final: sculpture. And how are they affecting the world today? By being restaurant managers, of course. And this makes me a little worried. Here I am happily working towards a bachelors in anthropology and also one in Spanish…and I suddenly feel that instead of digging in the ground in Latin America, I’ll be stuck scrubbing tables and serving lunch with a smile. Are bachelors degrees becoming the new high school diplomas?

So the laundromat that I sat in in Nashville had something interesting on the walls: pictures of movie stars with their “autographs.” Now I guess it’s cute to have something like that in a diner in Memphis where Elvis ate his peanut butter and banana sandwiches, or maybe even the outhouse Thoreau used….but at a dinky laundromat in Nashville? I doubt Lucille Ball or The Stones dropped a load in the same washer I happen to be scrubbing my bed sheets in. Kenny Rogers is debatable. Maybe the pictures were there to make me feel better about paying $2.00 to wash a comforter and two pillowcases, or they were just hanging around to inspire my future success in anthropology when I discover the lost tribe of Chile. I wouldn’t be a big enough star to warrant having my picture hung in a laundromat, but I bet you could find it behind a bathroom stall. And wouldn’t that be ironic…me sharing a porcelain throne with anyone in the world when I can’t even mention bodily function number two in conversation. Which makes me wonder if these stars had little quirks about laundromats.

pretending to be healthy

So I go to the grocery store to purchase healthier food. I fill my basket with grapes, pineapple, oranges, grapefruit. I then indulge in the vegetable section, focusing on the much-needed legumes. And then I get to that one isle, the isle that I can never pass up. This isle that has been the thorn in my side since my metabolism began to slow down contains the one thing most girls can’t live without: chocolate. Sure, let me fill the majority of my basket with healthy food…and then hide this little box of Little Debbie brownies. I have this little plan in my head that if the only items of food I purchase are healthy, I’ll be forced to eat healthy all the time. Yet that teeny-tiny little box of ooey-gooey chocolate brownies always seems to be the first to surface when I get home. And of course is chosen over the apples. I just can’t say no. But am I being that sinful?

I’ll tell you what is sinful though, allowing Queen Latifah to do K-Mart commercials…AND promote her movie that no one saw anyway in the midst of it.
